Part of PharmaSUG is giving something back to the community in which our conference is being held. In recent years, we have joined with the graduate program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, tthe Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in their efforts to cure cancer, and the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House to support families with seriously ill children.
This year, PharmaSUG is partnering with the Girls Inc. of Alameda County- inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold.
Girls Inc. of Alameda County – Inspiring All Girls to be Strong, Smart, and Bold
Founded in 1958, Girls Inc. of Alameda County designs and delivers pro-girl programs and, since the early 1990s, focuses specifically on meeting the needs of low-income girls and families from our county’s heavily disinvested communities.
Our vision is for all girls growing up in Alameda County to feel valued, safe, and prepared to achieve their dreams of college, career, and leadership. We inspire them to be:
STRONG – through mental and physical health
SMART – through academic engagement, particularly STEM
BOLD – through leadership development
Our K-5th grade programs help girls master foundational academic skills, learn to stay healthy, and build positive relationships with peers and adults. Girls engage in intensive literacy programming to build reading fluency, gain STEM skills and excitement with hands-on, minds-on projects, and practice healthy living habits. We partner with selected elementary schools in disinvested neighborhoods within the Oakland Unified School District and deliver our programs on-site, both after-school and during the school day.
Middle School Programs
Our 6th-8th grade programs support girls’ success by providing a pro-girl space where they can develop a positive identity and access a wide variety of challenging academic and physical activities. STEM skills and exploration are critical for this age group, and our girls participate in design-based STEM projects like building websites, exploring electronic circuitry, and designing games. They also take field trips to leading Bay Area STEM firms and meet female professionals where they can see STEM in action and begin to imagine themselves in future careers.
High School Programs
Our programs for high school girls focus on college and career readiness and community leadership. Girls deepen their exploration of STEM subjects, excel academically with the help of volunteer tutors, explore further career options, research higher education, learn how to apply to and pay for college, learn workplace readiness skills like professional dress and communication, develop an understanding of social change, and work towards the goals they have set for themselves.
How You Can Help
