Post-Conference Update: We blew our goal out of the water and raised over $5,300 for our adopted classroom. Thanks to everyone who participated! Your generosity will have a lasting impact on the community of San Diego for years to come!

Response from Heather Poland, Teacher at Perkins K-8: "Thank you SO much for your donation!!! My students and I are so exited to get new books! I am so overwhelmed by your generosity. I have never even had close to this amount to spend on my classroom, and these kids are SO deserving!"

Part of PharmaSUG is giving something back to the community in which our conference is being held. In 2012, we raised money for an adult literacy program in the San Francisco area. Last year, we adopted a classroom at a Chicago high school through the Adopt-A-Classroom program. For 2014, we will once again be partnering with Adopt-A-Classroom to make an impact in the San Diego area.

Our Goal for 2014

Last year we raised over $3700 for STEM education at a downtown Chicago high school. While PharmaSUG continues to support STEM education, literacy is a much larger concern in San Diego (and much of California), and without the ability to read, students will not have opportunities to explore STEM or other kinds of educational paths.

Our goal for 2014 is to raise $4000 for a San Diego middle school classroom (7th and 8th grade) struggling with illiteracy. Perkins K-8 is located less than a mile southeast of our hotel in the Logan Barrio. This particular school has some notable statistics:

  • Primary ethnicity is Hispanic/Latino (95%), followed by African American (3%)
  • 57% are English learners
  • 99% are eligible for free/reduced lunch
  • 71% of parents have a high school education or less

How You Can Help

We'll be raising money to purchase books and other classroom materials for use in our adopted classroom at Perkins K-8 in downtown San Diego. Teacher Heather Poland will be our special guest at our Opening Session where you'll have an opportunity to learn more about this need.

During the conference, we'll be accepting donations by cash or check, and we'll also have a kiosk for giving by credit card through the Adopt-A-Classroom website. We can easily exceed our goal of raising $4,000 if everyone at the conference were to donate just ten dollars. Please consider how you might participate!
